Today’s Sommelier has more educational options than ever before. From internationally recognised qualifications and professional Sommelier programmes to specialist regional education, academic wine studies and beverage-specific certifications, the paths into and through the profession have become increasingly diverse.
But these organisations do not all serve the same purpose. Some are dedicated specifically to the professional Sommelier, others focus on broader wine education, while some specialise in a particular country, region, beverage category or area of hospitality.
This guide therefore does not rank the programmes or attempt to identify a single “best” qualification. Instead, it provides an overview of ten leading organisations whose programmes are particularly relevant to wine and sommelier professionals, followed by a selection of other influential organisations and specialist educational paths.
The aim is simple: to help aspiring and established wine professionals understand the landscape before deciding which educational path best fits their own career ambitions.
The world of Sommelier and wine education has expanded into a diverse, international ecosystem. Traditional certification bodies now operate alongside specialist regional programmes, academic institutions and professional associations — each serving a different purpose within the industry. Understanding these distinctions is essential for professionals choosing the path that aligns with their career goals.

The Associazione Italiana Sommelier was founded in Milan on 7 July 1965. Over the decades it has developed into one of Italy's major wine organisations, with a nationwide network and extensive educational programme covering wine, tasting, service, food pairing, Italian wine regions and wine culture.

ASI was founded in Reims, France, on 3–4 June 1969 by representatives of national Sommelier organisations. Unlike a conventional wine school, ASI is an international professional association whose role includes advancing the Sommelier profession, establishing common standards, educating consumers and coordinating international competitions.

The Weinakademie Österreich was established in Rust in 1991 and has developed into one of Europe's important centres for professional wine education. Its programme ranges from introductory wine education through to the advanced Weinakademiker qualification, with international partnerships and educational programmes. The academy is based at the historic Seehof in Rust, with an additional office in Krems.

The Court of Master Sommeliers was established to encourage higher standards of beverage service in hotels and restaurants. The first Master Sommelier examination was held in London in 1969, and the Court of Master Sommeliers was formally established in 1977. The organisation has since developed into an international professional examination body, with its qualification pathway progressing from Introductory Sommelier through Certified and Advanced Sommelier to the Master Sommelier Diploma. Today, the Court of Master Sommeliers Worldwide comprises two chapters: CMS-Europe and CMS-Americas, with courses and examinations conducted across Europe, the Americas, Oceania and Asia. CMS-Americas was established as a chapter in 1987.

It functions as an advanced wine qualification rather than a conventional Sommelier certification.
