Questions:

Please, tell us about how you got into wine, the wine industry and how your career developed?

Wine has been my destiny. Born in a family of grape growers and winemakers in Champagne, France, I had my future mapped out before being born. At age 29, I left the family property and came to NZ with intention to plant a vineyard and produce world class sparkling wine. 38 years later I would like to think I have achieved just that.

What is your philosophy to making wine and viticulture?

I manage my vineyards with the environment in mind, aiming at producing premium fruit for making a wine capable of competing with the best from Champagne.

Which cultivar is your favourite to work with and why?

I only grow the classic grapes of Champagne, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. I believe they are ideal for the purpose, time proven in many places around the World and well suited to the Marlborough climate.

How do you see the future of wine production and what are the challenges and the opportunities?

I firmly believe production of quality wine has a bright future in spite of strong anti alcohol lobby. Consumers are learning to drink and appreciate better wine as they get older. There is however the constant challenge of wine education and promotion.

Where do you see the global wine market in 2025?

At age 68, I’m not sure if I can see that far! Seriously, there are signs of the wine culture spreading in emerging economies. It will surely boost wine production to new levels. Let’s hope new production will emphasise on quality rather than volume.
